Ferdinando Principiano
Monforte d’Alba, Barolo
Ferdinando Principiano is producing world-class elegant and natural wines, with a watermark of traditional Barolo terroir. Ferdinando started in 1993, with 7 hectares from his father and grandfather; he now owns and farms 21 hectares. All farming is uncertified organic, but he goes way beyond the normal organic practices and is obsessed with preserving or creating the conditions for biodiversity in and around his vineyards.
Ferdinando Principiano’s cellar is in Barolo sub-zone of Monforte with vineyard holdings in Monforte, Serralunga, and Alta Langa for his Timorasso and the relatively unknown Piedmont grape called Slarina. For the all the moving and shaking in Barolo the last twenty years, it’s worth noting that this southeast part of the Barolo has a palpable quiet and calm, with the nearby small town of Monforte itself as charming as ever.

Langhe Freisa
2022 | $45.00 | case of 6
The 2022 vintage offers a bright and expressive profile, showcasing aromas of strawberry and sour cherry. A close relative of Nebbiolo, this wine displays a naturally light color with delicate floral notes of violet and rose. On the palate, it is lively and refined, with snappy mineral-driven tannins that add structure and elegance.
Langhe Nebbiolo
2023 | $49.00 | case of 6
This 2022 vintage is a perfect example of house style—natural and aromatic, with a distinct mark of Serralunga terroir. Unlike most Langhe Nebbiolos that are fruit-forward, this one focuses on vibrant aromas of flowers, red fruits, and a hint of peach.
Barolo Ravera di Monforte
2020 | $132.00 | case of 6
“The 2020 Barolo Ravera di Monforte is a powerful, beguiling wine. Black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and scorched earth confer somber intensity that is matched by the wine’s depth and tannic heft.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Barolo Boscareto
2019 | $429.00 | Magnum
“The 2019 Barolo Boscareto is one of the most beautiful, expressive wines I have tasted from Ferdinando Principiano. Bright acids and veins of tannin shape this aromatic, nervy Barolo. There’s more than enough depth to play off the wine’s youthful austerity. Orange peel, sage, mint, tobacco, cedar and crushed red berry fruit fill out the layers. What a gorgeous wine this is.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
